Crappie USA Tournament Results for Millers Ferry Reservoir

This past Saturday Crappie USA held a qualifying event at the Millers Ferry Reservoir near Millers Ferry, Alabama. These anglers were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic. This year’s classic will be held October 24th-27th, 2012 on the Barkley/Kentucky Lakes at Cadiz, Kentucky.

 

Semi-Pro Division Results

Taking first place with an overwhelming weight was the team of Scott Rumsey of Milbrook, Alabama and Steve Brown of Elmore, Alabama with a weight of 12.39 pounds and earning $1,100.00. Scott and Steve were slow trolling the south end of the lake using live bait in 6-7 feet of water to catch over 30 keepers for the day. Each team is allowed to weigh in their best 7 fish for the day.

Second place went to the Birmingham, Alabama team of Mark and Paul Kreider weighing in 7.05 pounds and earning $650.00. Mark and Paul were fishing the Ellis Landing area of the lake fishing over structure in 15-16 feet of water using blue and red homemade jigs to land 8 keepers for the day.

In third place was the 3 person team from Thomasville, Alabama Joe, Alden and Hayden Dunn with a weight of 6.58 pounds and earning $450.00. Joe, Alden and Hayden were fishing the Hog Pen slough using Southern Pro tube jigs in a variety of colors in 4-6 feet of water, by pitching the jigs into grass to catch over 25 keepers for the day.

Gilford Sipes of Moody, Alabama and Shannon Sipes of Ashville, Alabama took fourth place with 5 fish at a weight of 5.62 pounds including big fish of the event weighing 2.40 pounds. Gilford and Shannon were fishing the south end of the lake using a Road Runner #2 head along with Southern Pro Shad Stingers in 12-15 feet of water. The team earned $280.00 for big fish of the event.

Fifth place went to Joe Duncan of Hanceville, Alabama and Kendall Pate of Pinson, Alabama with a weight of 4.22 pounds. Joe and Kendall were trolling blue jigs in front of the Miller Ferry dam where their fish were holding tight to structure.

Semi-Pro Ranger Cup Award

Winning the Ranger Cup Award in the Semi-Pro Division was the team of Robert Harris of Warner Robbins, Georgia and Roy Cape of Cordelle, Georgia earning $250.00.

 

Amateur Division Results

First place in the amateur division was the team of Brian Haveard of Pace, Florida and Stephen Smith of Jay, Florida weighing in 8.88 pounds and earning $800.00. Brian and Stephen were slow trolling chartreuse jigs tipped with minnows and having their best luck using pink jig heads in 25 feet of water in front of the Millers Ferry dam. The team caught 20 keeper fish (over 9 inches) for the day.

Second place went to the Camilla, Georgia team of Beth and Danny Williamson with a weight of 8.58 pounds and earning $400.00. Beth and Danny were slow trolling white/chartreuse jigs tipped with minnows on Deep South Rods and Vicious Line. In addition Beth and Danny had second biggest fish of the event with a 2.17 pound crappie giving them an additional $70.00.

Taking third place was the team of Ricky Blackwell of Oakma, Alabama and Kayne Cordell of Jasper, Alabama weighing in 8.16 pounds and earning them $200.00. Ricky and Kayne were slow trolling live bait the area around the dam in 6-8 feet of water to catch 7 keeper fish for the day.

In fourth was the Camden, Alabama team of Craig Gamble and James Dailey weighing in 6.5 pounds. Craig and James were also fishing the area near the dam working ledges with structure in 14-23 feet of water using live bait.

Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo

In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$2,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic.

Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $310,000.00 to the “Crappie Kids” Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA “Kids Fishing Rodeos”.

A special thanks goes out to the Wilcox Area Chamber for their support of this event. Also a special thanks goes out to Bill Malone, Big Daddy Lawler and all the folks in Camden for making the anglers welcome. Stats for the Tournament:

Weather-Winds 5-10 MPH early increasing to 10-15 MPH in the afternoon. Temperatures were in the 30’s early increasing to 50 degrees in the afternoon.
