A beautiful spring day and a lake of hungry and biting crappie await fishermen for the 6th Annual Wilcox Area Chamber Big Crappie Tournament. Fishermen should purchase tickets at area ticket outlets no later than Friday, April 12th, in order to participate in the tournament. On Saturday tickets will be available at the Miller’s Ferry Marina only from 5:30am to 8am. Tickets are $30 adult and $15 youth. The heaviest crappie of the day wins $1000. The overall top 10 will receive prize money as well as the top 3 in each of the hourly weigh-ins.
Fishermen can begin weighing in fish at 8:30am at two locations on the lake: Miller’s Ferry Marina and the Roland Cooper State Park. Hourly weigh-in cut offs are 9, 10, 11, 12, 1, and 2. There will be one final weigh-in at 3pm at the Miller’s Ferry Marina only followed by the awards presentation. Nearly two thousand dollars worth of door prizes will be distributed as well.
The event has averaged 215 anglers in each of the prior five tournaments and this year expects to draw a larger than normal crowd due to the excellent fishing occurring on the lake at this time.
The public is invited to the Miller’s Ferry Marina for the 3pm tournament finals. The Gettin’ Outdoors Radio Show with Big Daddy Lawler will be broadcasted live from the Miller’s Ferry Marina Saturday morning from 7:30 to 9 (95.5FM).
April 13th also kicks off the 30-day Derby with over 200 tagged crappie in the lake. Fish range in value from $25,000 to $100. Anglers must purchase an entry ticket in the Derby prior to catching a tagged fish and must present the fish alive to a check station. Complete rules are available at ticket outlets. Entry fee for the Derby is $10 for an adult and $5 for a youth. Tickets for the Derby will remain on sale throughout the thirty day event.
Daily updates on the Derby will be posted to this website as well as the Chamber’s Facebook page.
