2013 Crappie Derby – Final Results

The Wilcox Area Chamber of Commerce’s sixth Crappie Derby ended on Sunday, May 12. This year’s event enjoyed a record catch of tagged fish as participating anglers reeled in $34,400 in prize money. 33 of the 209 fish were caught. Two of the five “big money” fish were redeemed along with 21 single tagged 2013 fish and 5 prior year tagged fish. Nine fish were caught by anglers that had not entered the contest and one was fileted before the tag was discovered.

$1000 Fish Caught in Derby

Jim Lash of Saraland holds the 20th single tagged fish caught in the Crappie Derby. Jim landed the fish this morning near the Miller’s Ferry Campground. The 20th fish netted Jim $1000! Jim and his wife spend a week each spring at the Miller’s Ferry Campground and have fished in the Derby nearly every year. This is the first tagged fish they have caught but it was one they will never forget!

Fishermen have reeled in record catches in the 6th Annual Wilcox Area Chamber Crappie Derby, which continues through Sunday. Over $34,000 has been claimed thus far. Remaining single tagged fish are worth $100 through Sunday. Three “big money” fish remain in the lake as well (two at $5000 and one at $10,000. Fish tagged with prior year tags are worth $50.

The 19th single tagged fish was reported at 10:50am Thursday morning. It was caught by Jessica Marsh of Catherine while fishing off the bank at Miller’s Ferry Campground. The next 2013 single tagged fish to be reported to 334-525-0462 will win $1000.

There have been 19 single tagged fish redeemed for prize money, 9 caught by anglers without entry tickets and one fileted before the tag was noticed. Two of the 5 big money fish have been caught: the $25,000 and one of the $5,000 fish. It has been a record year for tagged fish catches in the 6th year of the Derby.

Three big money fish (1 at $10,000 and 2 at $5,000) remain in the lake. The 20th single tagged fish of 2013 will win $1000. The Derby continues through May 12 and tickets remain on sale throughout the event. There is still a lot of money to win!

There were no tagged fish catches on Wednesday. Reports of fish caught by non ticket holders continue to come in. We have received two more reports of catches, bringing the total the 9. Anglers who declined to purchase a ticket have missed out on $3500 in winnings.

Calvett Pettis caught the 18th single tagged fish of the Derby on Tuesday, worth $100, and getting us closer to the 20th fish worth $1000.

Dennis Causey caught the 17th single tagged fish on Saturday in the Miller’s Ferry area, worth $100. This fish gets us a little closer to the 20th tagged fish that will be worth $1000.

There weather has not been cooperating but tagged fish catches are still being reported late this week. Yet another angler without a Derby ticket caught a single tagged fish on Thursday.
